A recent campaign by Maldon District Council in which officers actively encouraged local small businesses to claim reductions in their business rates has resulted in around £100,000 being paid out. Despite the Council actively promoting the “Small Business Rate Relief” scheme research undertaken during late 2008 showed that around 25% of businesses that were potentially eligible for the relief had not submitted a claim. The Council contacted these small businesses and assisted them in making successful applications. In some cases this meant that relief was backdated to 2007 and refunds of hundreds of pounds sent to small businesses. There are strict timescales for applying for the reduction so the Council is eager to ensure that all small businesses make a claim as soon as possible to ensure they don’t lose out on cash that's rightfully theirs. Councillor Peter Elliott Chairman of the Council’s Finance and Corporate Services Committee said “Supporting the Local Economy is one of the Councils top priorities. It is working hard to help support local businesses, particularly during the current economic downturn,. This recent initiative is an example of our commitment” Any small businesses who think they might be entitled to help towards their rates bills should contact the Council on 01621 854477.
